The WAVE is an exciting grassroots program to involve watershed residents
in the rescue of Lake Simcoe.
1. If residents stopped
using chemical lawn fertilizers containing phosphorus,
2. If they watered more wisely and began to keep yards healthy in more natural ways,
this would help reduce the amount of phosphorus flowing into Lake Simcoe.
What’s more...
3. If many residents
started taking action to improve water quality, it would send a strong
message to others that improving the lake’s health is a priority.
The WAVE program began as a pilot in the Oak Meadow area
of Keswick in 2004. In 2005 it reached 2,000 families around the
Lake and into the watershed. In 2006 it reached 3,500 families.
Over three summers, the WAVE's Healthy Yards, Healthy Waters project rolled out community by community, with increasing success from 2004 to 2006. This was accomplished with a great team of young people, "The WAVE Patrol". Eight to ten specially trained WAVE Patrollers visited homes, attended events, markets and get togethers in all areas of the watershed where they shared their expertise and provided good information.
See Free Help for simple and effective steps that you can take
to help save Lake Simcoe. Communities of all sizes are invited
to get involved.
Our ultimate goal is to involve all 100,000 families living
in the watershed.
